What does Memorial Day mean to you? It is a time to remember all of the people who have given their lives in service to our country. It also signals the arrival of summer and with it a wealth of outdoor activities, events, and festivals. Greensboro and nearby North Carolina cities offer several options for commemorating the holiday and celebrating the start of the new season. Not sure how to spend the long weekend? We’ve rounded up the best activities and events to make your Memorial Day holiday memorable.

GEARS & GUITARS MUSIC FESTIVAL (WINSTON-SALEM)

The Gears & Guitars Music Festival is a four-day event starting Friday, May 26th in Downtown Winston-Salem. The festival coincides with the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic and will feature performances by Corey Smith, Collective Soul, Barenaked Ladies and Mipso, rain or shine! The weekend will conclude with a free Memorial Day concert in the park from 1 PM to 9 PM.

CRAFT BREWERY TOUR (GREENSBORO)

Celebrate American craft beer on Memorial Day with a guided tour of local Greensboro breweries! Tap Hopper Tours’ Saturday event will showcase the Gate City’s amazing craft brewery scene. The three-hour tour includes a ride to and from World of Beer in Greensboro, 20% off food, in-depth tours of 3 local breweries or distilleries, a souvenir cup, 4-5 beer samples, and loads of socializing over the city’s best beer. Learn how the craft beer culture has evolved in Greensboro, directly from the people who have been in the industry.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE & CELEBRATION (THOMASVILLE)

Take a short day trip to see the Thomasville Memorial Day Parade & Celebration, the area’s capstone Memorial Weekend event. It begins at 8:00 a.m.with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall on I-85 and a parade downtown. After the parade, grab a free hot dog while they last, see paratroopers jump from the skies, and more.

VISIT GREENSBORO HISTORY MUSEUM (GREENSBORO)

One great way to spend a few hours over Memorial Day Weekend is by learning about American history. Stop by the Greensboro History Museum and learn about the city’s history and its bigger role in making our country what it is today. Trace Guilford County’s history from the Revolutionary War through World War II by walking the exhibits or attending a scheduled lecture.

GUILFORD COURTHOUSE NATIONAL MILITARY PARK (GREENSBORO)

If it’s a nice day out, visit Guilford Courthouse National Military Park to remember the Revolutionary War and discover what happened on the battlefield. Take an outdoor self-guided tour by foot, bike, or car by following the instructions and map provided in the visitor's center, or by listening to a cell phone audio tour.
